GLA:D Program

GLA:D Program for Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis

What is the GLA:D Program?

The GLA:D (Good Life with Osteoarthritis in Denmark) program is a comprehensive and evidence-based treatment program designed to help individuals with hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) manage their condition, reduce pain, and improve function. Developed in Denmark, the GLA:D program has been proven to be effective in improving the quality of life for people living with OA by incorporating exercise, education, and self-management strategies.

The GLA:D program focuses on two key components:

  1. Exercise: A structured exercise regimen aimed at improving strength, flexibility, and joint function. The exercises are tailored to the needs of individuals with hip and knee osteoarthritis and are performed under the supervision of our GLA:D certified physiotherapists.
  2. Education: Participants are educated on osteoarthritis, how it affects the body, and how to manage the condition effectively. This education helps individuals make informed decisions about their health and adopt strategies for daily living that can alleviate pain and improve joint health.

By combining these two elements, the GLA:D program provides a holistic approach to managing osteoarthritis, empowering individuals to take control of their condition and improve their overall well-being.

Who is the GLA:D Program for?

The GLA:D program is suitable for adults who have been diagnosed with hip or knee osteoarthritis, whether you are newly diagnosed or have been managing the condition for a while. If you experience symptoms like pain, stiffness, or reduced function in your hip or knee joints, the GLA:D program could be an ideal solution. Please note, you do not need to have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis to participate in GLA:D

The GLA:D program is recommended for individuals who:

  • Are living with mild to moderate osteoarthritis in the hip or knee.
  • Want to improve joint function, strength, and reduce pain through a non-surgical approach.
  • Are looking for a structured program that combines both physical activity and education to manage their condition.
  • Have been advised by a healthcare professional to seek treatment or rehabilitation for their osteoarthritis symptoms.

The program is suitable for all levels of fitness, as exercises are adapted to each participant’s needs and capabilities. Whether you are active and want to maintain or improve your mobility or you’re looking to reduce pain and improve daily function, the GLA:D program can help you achieve your goals.

What does the GLA:D program involve?

The GLA:D program runs for 6 weeks consisting of twice weekly exercise sessions. Participants complete these sessions at Watsonia Physiotherapy in a class setting with a GLA:D certified physiotherapist supervising. Participants complete the same eight exercises in each session and your physiotherapist will progress the difficulty of these exercises as appropriate based on your symptoms and level of exertion. The exercises are aimed at strengthening the muscles around the hip and knee joints.

At some point during your 6-week program, an education session will be run to allow participants to gain a better understanding of osteoarthritis and the evidence behind the GLA:D program. This session is free and is run by GLA:D certified physiotherapists.

How to join?

Before beginning the program, you will have an initial assessment with one of our GLAD-certified physiotherapists. Your physiotherapist will take some baseline measurements of your current level of function and discuss your goals for completing the program. After your assessment, you can begin the 6-week program and upon completion, have a subsequent appointment with your physiotherapist to discuss progress and next steps in the management of your knee or hip osteoarthritis.
