Bone Health Program

Osteoporosis Treatment & Prevention

Improve your bone density and reduce your risk of falls and fractures

Our Bone Health Program is an exercise-based program specially designed for individuals with osteoporosis or osteopenia. Aiming to improve bone density and strength, increase balance, and reduce the risk of fractures, it is based on quality research, involving twice-weekly physiotherapist led exercise sessions.

This evidence-based class offers safe, targeted exercises in a supportive, clinical setting. It focuses on a combination of resistance training and balance exercises.

Why does bone density matter?

Osteoporosis and osteopenia are conditions characterised by weakened bones, increasing the risk of fractures. Regular exercise, particularly strength training and weight-bearing activities, is a proven way to improve bone density and maintain bone health, slowing or even reversing the progression of osteoporosis and osteopenia. This in turn leads to a reduced risk of fractures, and an improved quality of life.

What are the benefits of the Bone Health Program?

  • Enhanced bone strength and density
  • Improved balance and coordination
  • Reduced risk of falls and fractures
  • Improved muscle strength and flexibility
  • A safer and more active lifestyle
  • Better mobility and overall health

Who can join?

The Bone Health Program is suitable for anyone looking to improve their bone health. To join a class, you will need to:

    • Be cleared by your physiotherapist or GP to participate.
    • Have a current diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis (or be considered at-risk).

What does the Bone Health Program involve?

Baseline assessment:

    • Your physiotherapist will explain the program, determine your eligibility, and gain a baseline measure of your movement and function.

Group exercise sessions:

    • Twice a week group exercise sessions for 8 weeks, in a supportive environment

Tailored, safe & effective exercises:

    • Your physiotherapist will guide you through safe and adaptable exercises that focus on weight-bearing, resistance, and balance activities to stimulate bone and muscle growth.

Review assessment:

    • After 2 months of the program, your physiotherapist will reassess your movement and function, discuss your progress, and plan your next steps.

What if I want to extend the program?

The program runs for 8 weeks; however, there is the potential to increase this if it is clinically suitable or introduce other forms of exercise including Clinical Pilates/Group Rehabilitation. One goal of the program is to develop an understanding of exercise principles, which can lead to a more independent program being completed away from the clinic. Your physiotherapist will guide you through this.
