Falls Prevention & Balance Classes

Recent Australian and international studies have revealed that approximately one in three people aged 65 years and over fall each year, with 10 per cent having multiple falls and more than 30 per cent sustaining an injury and requiring medical attention. That is why here at Watsonia Physiotherapy, we understand the importance of maintaining balance and preventing falls.

As we age, the risk of sustaining a fall becomes much higher. The following may also increase your risk of sustaining a fall:

    • Past history of falls
    • Frailty and muscle weakness
    • Poor balance
    • Comorbidities e.g., Cardiac conditions and diabetes
    • Cognitive impairments
    • Lack of physical activity
    • Visual impairment
    • Prolonged bed rest
    • Undernutrition

What is our approach?

Our Falls Prevention and Balance Class takes a holistic approach to reducing falls risk. Led by experienced physiotherapists, the class focuses on factors that contribute to balance and stability, including strength, proprioception and coordination.

Before commencing our Falls Prevention and Balance Class, our physiotherapists conduct a comprehensive assessment to tailor our program for you and to monitor your progress throughout the classes.
