Injury Information
Whiplash
Whiplash
Whiplash is an injury to the neck which occurs when the head is rapidly moved backwards and then forwards. This can often occur because of a rear-end motor vehicle accident, sporting injury, or fall.
When is an X-ray required?
If neck movement is very painful and limited immediately post injury, an x-ray may be required to rule out any serious issues such as fractures.
Symptoms of Whiplash
Some of the main symptoms associated with whiplash can include
- Neck pain or stiffness
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Pins and needles in the arms or hands
- Prognosis
Depending on the severity of injury, recovery time can range from a few weeks to several months. During this time treatment will aim at improving function, decreasing pain, and strengthening muscles of the neck, shoulders, and upper back to better support the neck. This will be implemented through a combination of hands-on treatment and a tailored home exercise program.
