What We Treat
Chronic Headaches
Do you suffer from chronic headaches?
The team at Watsonia Physiotherapy offers a range treatments for chronic headaches, at our Watsonia Clinic located just north-east of Melbourne’s CBD. Your treatment will be focused on reducing your pain, identifying the cause, and providing effective management that works.
Chronic headaches can severely disrupt your life, so finding the cause of your headaches is vital to designing an effective treatment plan. There are generally two types of chronic headaches: primary and secondary. Primary headaches are standalone headaches, not related to any other problem, for example migraines.
Secondary headaches are caused by an underlying problem, usually because of a problem with your neck (whiplash, pinched nerve, osteoporosis, and so on). As you can appreciate, identifying the cause of your chronic headaches is vital to designing an effective treatment program.
How do we treat chronic headaches?
If you’re a sufferer of chronic headaches or migraines, you don’t need convincing that they’re one of the most painful, debilitating conditions you could possibly suffer. Millions upon millions of dollars a year are spent on trying to find relief from this crippling illness. However, our team of highly qualified physiotherapists have treated thousands of clients suffering from chronic headaches.
Your first appointment will focus on relieving your pain and identifying the cause of your headaches. Over the years, we have found that by removing the tension of your headache, we also reduce the inflammation around the joints, muscles and blood vessels in your neck, as well as the pain you experience. Depending on our initial assessment, you might need to undergo an X-ray, Ultrasound and/or MRI scan. However, once we have a cause to hand, we can design a treatment plan that includes manual therapies and exercises, all meant to reduce your pain and relieve your headaches.
We work with you to prevent your recurring headaches, whether this is by improving your posture, increasing the strength and flexibility of your neck muscles, or releasing the trigger points (muscle knots) in your neck. Massage, acupuncture and dry needling have all proven effective in treating chronic headaches.
