You may be suffering from plantar fascia pain (aka or plantar fasciopathy), an inflammation of your ‘fascia’, or connective tissue, that runs from your heel to the ball of the foot.
Most commonly, pain is felt under the heel, but may also be felt along the arch of the foot. It may feel like a sharp stretch, worse in the morning and when getting moving after long periods of sitting or standing. The pain should ease with activity as the fascia stretches out, but returns as an ache once resting again.
The condition is more common among people who are overweight, have poor foot posture, runners, and people who have to stand for long periods for work.
Pain relief strategies include rolling your foot along a golf ball or frozen drink bottle, taping the foot or gentle stretching. Treatment will also consist of managing the cause of the symptoms. For example, runners may need to reduce their training load, or people with poor foot posture may need to change their footwear. Your physiotherapist will determine which strategies will be most appropriate for you.
